Preeta Mathur Thakur
Preeta’s professional theatre career started in 1987 when she joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) in Mumbai. Her debut role was in the play Bakri directed by M.S. Sathyu, which was followed by performances in Andhe Choohe (1988), an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap by Javed Siddiqui, and Moteram Ka Satyagrah (1989), again under Sathyu’s direction. Her versatility and talent quickly became evident, earning her roles in productions like Aakhri Peshi (1989) directed by Jaspal Sandhu and Ghoda (1990) directed by Rajendra Mehra.
Joining Ank and Blossoming Under Dinesh Thakur’s Guidance
In 1991, Preeta’s journey took a pivotal turn when she joined her husband Dinesh Thakur’s Ank Theatre Group. This collaboration allowed her to hone her craft under his mentorship, playing lead roles in a wide array of productions. Preeta starred in plays that showcased her ability to adapt to various genres and styles, ranging from classics to contemporary works. Some of her early performances with Ank included Adal Badal (1991), Jaan Lijiye (1991), and Mausam Suhana (1992). As her career progressed, Preeta took on more challenging roles. In 1992, she performed in Kachua Khargosh, Aaj Raat (based on J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls), and Kanyadaan by Vijay Tendulkar. The year also saw her in Beewion Ka Madarsa, adapted from Molière’s School for Wives. In 1993, her portrayal in Khamosh Adalat Jari Hai (based on Vijay Tendulkar’s Shantata Court Chalu Aahe) and Anji (Vijay Tendulkar’s Chi Sow Ka) further established her as a formidable actor.

Preeta’s roles in plays like Tum Kya Jano Preet (1994), adapted from Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, and Faisla Aapka (1995), based on Ayn Rand’s Night of January Sixteenth, showcased her ability to handle complex narratives. She also performed in Aadhe Adhoore (1995) by Mohan Rakesh, a play that delves into the intricacies of human relationships. Other notable performances included Hamesha (1996) by Javed Siddiqui, Aatma Katha (1997) by Mahesh Elkunchwar, and Antigone (1998), based on the original Greek classic by Sophocles.
Her portrayal in Jiya Jaye Na (1999), adapted from Neil Simon’s Prisoner of Second Avenue, was another highlight of her career. Moving into the 2000s, Preeta continued to impress audiences with performances in Jaat Hi Poocho Sadhu Ki (2000) and Kamla (2000) by Vijay Tendulkar. She showcased her comic timing in Jaane Na Doongi, Hamesha, Hum Dono, and Hamari Neeta Ki Shaadi, and her emotional quotient in Prashn Panchali, Kamiya, Mitron Marjaani and Jis Lahore Nahi Dekhya. Her solo presentations in Prashn Panchali and Atke Bhatke Latke Sur have also been widely appreciated.
Diversifying into Films and Television
Parallel to her thriving theatre career, Preeta Mathur Thakur ventured into films and television. From 1989 to 2013, she appeared in significant cameos in films directed by stalwarts like Shyam Benegal, Kundan Shah, Raj Kumar Santoshi, and Amol Palekar. Her filmography includes Suraj ka Satwan Ghoda, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, and Damini. On television, she was part of notable series such as Shyam Benegal’s Bharat Ek Khoj, M.S. Sathyu’s Kayar, Kundan Shah’s Manoranjan, and the telefilm Chauthi Ka Joda. Her role as a host on Zee TV’s program Mere Ghar Aana Zindagi alongside Tom Alter further established her presence on the screen.
Writing, Directing, and Innovation
Beyond acting, Preeta has made significant contributions as a writer and director. Her innovative online storytelling sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic showcased her adaptability and creative vision. She directed and narrated stories like Passport Ka Rang by Tejendra Sharma and Manovriti by Munshi Premchand, engaging audiences through digital platforms. After Dinesh Thakur’s passing in 2012, Preeta took over the leadership of Ank Theatre Group. Under her stewardship, the group continued to thrive, participating in numerous national and international theatre festivals.
She also organised the Dinesh Thakur Memorial Theatre Festivals in various cities, ensuring his legacy lived on. Preeta’s leadership has been marked by a focus on nurturing young talent through Ank’s Developmental Internship Programme for Stage Histrionics and Arts (DISHA), where she guides newcomers in the art of theatre.
A Distinguished Corporate Career
Balancing her artistic pursuits, Preeta also had a successful corporate career. She served as Deputy General Manager in Finance and later in Procurement at ACC Ltd., Mumbai, from 1986 until her voluntary retirement in 2017. Her corporate experience has further enhanced her organizational skills, contributing to her effective management of the theatre group.
Current and Future Endeavors
Today, Preeta Mathur Thakur continues to be a dynamic force in the world of theatre. She is actively involved in new projects, including rehearsals for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and an upcoming play on Rani Abbakka, which she has written. Her commitment to promoting Hindi theatre is unwavering, as she works on training young actors and exploring new mediums like podcasts and digital storytelling.
